
Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School (Tsinghua SIGS) was launched in March 2019. Tsinghua SIGS-Tsinghua Univesity's sole campus located outside of Beijing-is a further expansion and integration of the Tsinghua Graduate School at Shenzhen (GSST) and the Tsinghua-Berkeley Shenzhen Institute (TBSI), which were founded in 2001 and2014, respectively.
At Tsinghua SIGS, we offer 6+1' theme areas to promote interdisciplinary research and learning: Materials Science, Data Science and Information Technology, Bio-pharmaceutical and Health Engineering, Ocean Engineering, Future Human Habitats, Environment and Ecology, and Innovation Management.

About IOE
The Institute for Ocean Engineering has established a comprehensive interdisciplinary system centered on the five-dimensional synergy of Engineering-Equipment-Power-Information-Environment, integrating multidisciplinary approaches to cover deep-sea construction—equipment regulation—energy and power—digital and intelligent enablement—environmental sustainability.
The discipline's facilities in Shenzhen include one national, five provincial/ministerial, and six municipal-level platforms. Its core assets comprise an ocean engineering basin with controllable wind-generation for scaled-model testing of floating structures, an offshore comprehensive test site, and the thousand-ton-class research vessel Qingyan Haishi 1.
Application Programs
Institute for Ocean Engineering (IOE) offers 6 Doctoral Programs and 3 Master's Programs to international students. Master's degree programs are generally required to be completed in 2-3 years, and Doctoral degree programs in 3-4 years. For students with a Bachelor's degree who move on directly to pursue a Doctoral degree program, the study period is normally 4-5 years.
01 Requirements & Programs
Application Requirements
·Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens with a valid personal ordinary-type passport.
· Master's degree program applicants should have a Bachelor's degree or an equivalent degree to a Bachelor's degree (or above) in China. Doctoral degree program applicants should have a Master's degree or an equivalent degree to a Master's degree (or above) in China.
· The students who will enroll in 2026 must obtain the nationally recognized bachelor's or master's degree (for the universities of Chinese mainland) or the authentication report issued by Chinese Service Center for Scholarly Exchange, Ministry of Education, P. R. China (CSCSE) (for overseas universities) before THU graduate student registration date of 2026, otherwise the admission qualification is invalid.
· For bachelor degree holders to pursue doctoral degrees, Applicants must meet all the uniform requirements of the university, as well as the requirement that non-native English speakers must meet the minimum English proficiency requirement that a TOEFL score not lower than 80 or an IELTS score not lower than 6.5. Applicants who have completed their undergraduate studies full-time in English must submit a certificate from their graduation institute. They may request an English waiver upon approval.
· Applicants should be in good health and of good character (meet the physical examination requirements stipulated by the country and THU), be well-behaved and willing to abide by China's laws and regulations, as well as Tsinghua's rules.
· The applicant's Chinese or English proficiency should meet the language proficiency requirements announced by relevant schools/departments in the 'Remarks of Application' of Catalog of Graduate Programs 2026.
· The applicant shall carefully check whether he/she meets the application qualification and application requirements (including the application requirements declared by the target school / department / major / program) before applying. The relevant consequences arising from his/her failure to meet the application qualification and application requirements shall be borne by the applicant himself/herself.

* Please note that if you would like to apply for any scholarships, we recommend that you aim to have your application completed and submitted by December 2025. For information on Chinese Government Scholarship application, please refer to China Scholarship Council official website.
Minimum Admissions Requirements
For a Master's Program, the applicant shall:
· Expect to or hold a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.
· Obtain a satisfactory scholastic average, usually a minimum grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 (B) on a 4.0 scale.
For a Doctoral Program, the applicant shall:
· Expect to or hold a Master's degree from an accredited institution.
· Obtain a satisfactory scholastic average, usually a minimum grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 (B) on a 4.0 scale.
For a Direct Doctoral Program, the applicant shall:
· Expect to or hold a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.
· Obtain an excellent scholastic average, usually a minimum grade-point average (GPA) of 3.5 (B+) on a 4.0 scale.
Application Documents
· Personal statement.
· Degree certificate and degree authentication.
· Academic transcript.
· Two academic recommendation letters.
· Passport (Personal ordinary-type passport): Passport information page.
· Language Proficiency Test score report (optional). Students who have attended universities full-time where English is the principal language of instruction can request an English waiver.

03 Costs & Financial Support
Tuition Costs & Fees
Application Fee: 800RMB
Insurance: 800RMB/year
Tuition Fee: 33, 000RMB/year for Master'sPrograms;
40, 000RMB/year for Doctoral Programs;
Accommodation:
SIGS provides accommodation for all full-time graduate students. School accommodation is automatically reserved for admitted students, who do not need to apply separately. The housing rate for 2026 will be announced upon registration.
Financial Aids
The scholarships will be granted on both merit and need basis.
Chinese Government Scholarship (CGS)
The Full CGS usually covers tuition, stipend, on-campus accommodation (or accommodation subsidy), and medical insurance. Annual Review is strictly required for all CGS holders.
Tuition Scholarship
Covers full or partial tuition fee with a duration of one academic year. Applicants may apply for Tuition Scholarships annually (competitive).
SIGS Excellence Scholarship
Applications from full-time international new students admitted to our institute will be ranked and selected based on their previous academic achievements, research outcomes, and overall performance. The specific amount of the scholarship will be tiered and distributed according to the results of the annual selection process.
Living Allowance
All students are eligible: 3,810 RMB/month for doctoral students and 600 RMB/month for Master's students.
Assistantship
Outstanding students will be considered for Teaching Assistants and Research Assistants positions.

Visa Application and Enrollment Registration
· Admitted students should apply for a student visa (X1 visa) at the Embassy or Consulate of the People's Republic of China in their home country. To apply, students should provide their personal ordinary-type passport, Admission Notice and its Appendix, Confirmation Form for Study in China (JW201/JW202), and Physical Examination Record for Foreigners (applicants should confirm with the Chinese embassy/consulate for specific requirements).
· Students must enter China with an ordinary-type passport (nationality and personal information must be consistent with the passport information as applying) and X1 visa, and must apply for a Residence Permit within 30 days after arrival in China. Students are required to arrive at Tsinghua University and complete their university registration during the dates indicated in the admission package.
· Normally, registration is held in late August or early September. The registration location is Shenzhen. Please refer to your admission documents for the specific details.
· All students should present the required original degree certificates, and submit the degree authentication issued by THU designated institutions upon registration at Tsinghua University for enrollment qualification review. Students who fail the enrollment qualification review will be disqualified from enrollment and study at Tsinghua University.
