We are excited to invite outstanding undergraduate and graduate students from other universities to the Environmental Science and Engineering Doctoral Program of the Institute for Ocean Engineering (IOE)! This program offers hands-on research opportunities in the fields of Marine Biodiversity and Ecological Security, Marine Microbial Ecology, Physiology, and In Situ Life Processes in Extreme Environments, Marine Environment and Ecotoxicology, Global Environmental Change, Marine Resource Development and Utilization, Coastal Wetland Ecology and Ecological Restoration Engineeringand related areas.
About IOE
As an important achievement of Tsinghua's interdisciplinary research development, the Institute for Ocean Engineering of Tsinghua SIGS (IOE) aims to conduct cutting-edge research in ocean engineering and equipment, ocean energy and information, ocean resources and environment, with strong foundation on marine science and marine technology.
Based on Tsinghua’s academic background in civil engineering, hydraulic engineering, environmental engineering, advanced manufacturing, mechanical engineering, energy engineering, information engineering, life sciences, and other academic disciplines, together with innovative spirit of Shenzhen and its prevailing geographical edge in South China Sea, and support from SIGS and Tsinghua, IOE strives to build a highly interdisciplinary and world-class Ocean Science and Engineering center.
Currently, more than 200 researchers and scientists at Tsinghua University (Shenzhen and Beijing) are involved in marine research and development. Over recent years, more than 100 research projects have been carried out, including multiple influential achievements. Set to follow the principles of high standard, international visibility, leadership and industrial implementation, IOE is building a strong faculty team with diverse age level, comprehensive professional structure and outstanding innovation ability.
We have established collaboration with top universities and research institutions to implement joint research in ocean engineering, marine equipment, marine information, marine energy, and marine ecology and environment, fostering integration of science and engineering, and strengthening the collaborative innovation of Government-Industry-University-Research-Application. We are dedicated to technology innovation and achievements transformation to serve the country's strategic planning in marine development, and to enhance marine science and technology while building the talents pool in order to develop marine economy in Guangdong and Shenzhen.

Scholarship
Applicants are welcome to apply for the Chinese Government Scholarship,Tuition Scholarships, and Tsinghua SIGS Excellence Scholarship.
We also offer living allowances(PhD students:33,000 RMB/ year,distributed as 2,750 RMB/month).
Accommodation
SIGS provides accommodation for ALL full-time graduate students.
Workspace
If needed, the institute can help reserve a workspace in the shared study area for students to use. Also the supervisor usually will provide a workspace for you.
Application Information
Qualifications of Applicants
1.Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens with a valid personal ordinary-type passport.
2. Doctoral degree program applicants should have a Master's degree or an equivalent degree to a Master's degree (or above) in China. The students who will enroll in 2025 must obtain the nationally recognized master's degree (for the universities of Chinese mainland) or the authentication report issued by Chinese Service Center for Scholarly Exchange, Ministry of Education, P. R. China (CSCSE) (for overseas universities) before THU graduate student registration date of 2025, otherwise the admission qualification is invalid.
3. For bachelor degree holders to pursue doctoral degrees. Applicants must meet all the uniform requirements of the university, as well as the requirements of SIGS listed below:
The Minimum Requirement of Undergraduate GPA or Average scores: 3.5/4.0 or B+ or 85/100；
Chinese Proficiency Requirement: HSK band 4 with a score of 195 or above; English program applicants can be exempt from the HSK certificates.
Non-native English speakers must meet the minimum English proficiency requirement: TOEFL:80/IELTS:6.5.
